Unit-1 of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant, located in Parbatipur of Dinajpur, has resumed operation after remaining shut down for six days. As a result, electricity supply to the national grid has increased slightly.
According to relevant sources, the 125 MW capacity unit restarted power generation at 4:22 am on Friday after completing repair work. Currently, the unit is generating around 55 to 60 MW of electricity.
The plant’s Chief Engineer, Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique, said that the unit had to be shut down on April 25 due to a boiler pipe rupture. After necessary repairs, it has now been brought back into operation. Meanwhile, overhauling work is ongoing at Unit-3 of the plant.
According to the concerned Chinese contracting firm, Unit-3 is expected to resume operation by May 15. Once it is operational, the power supply situation is likely to improve further.
Of the plant’s three units, two had already been out of operation earlier. When the last operational Unit-1 also broke down due to boiler tube damage caused by stones entering along with coal, the entire plant temporarily ceased production.
