Fireworks: Country celebrates 20 thousand MW capacity

Dhaka city was lit up by spectecular fireworks as the country celebrates 20 thousand MW power generation capacity. The fireworks took place in three different places of the city on Friday evening.

State minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Nasrul Hamid inaugurated the show. The fireworks were arranged at Hatirjheel, Sadarghat and Bashundhara Convention Center of the capital. Patriotic songs were played during the show, and various acheivement of the ruling government were highlighted along with a laser show showing the progress of power sector of the country since 1971.

The power generation capacity of 124 power plants across the country now stands at 17,043 MW.
The captive power plants add another 2,800 MW to the national grid while renewable energy sources contribute nearly another 290 MW, which adds up to 20, 133 MW. Besides, Bangladesh will start importing 500 MW of more electricity from India from 10th of September.

In 2016, the government organised a similar celebration when power generation capacity reached 10,000 megawatt.
