Fuel loading has begun in the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, marking the final stage before the start of nuclear power generation in Bangladesh.

This is considered a historic milestone in the country’s energy sector. Electricity generation of around 300 megawatts from the first unit is expected to begin gradually from August.

The first shipment of nuclear fuel arrived in Dhaka from Russia by air on September 28, 2023. Several additional shipments followed. Under strict security measures, the fuel was transported by road to Rooppur in October, where it has since been stored. A total of 164 fuel bundles, including one spare, were brought into the country. Each bundle used at Rooppur contains 312 fuel rods.

An inaugural ceremony for the fuel loading was held at the power plant site in Ishwardi, Pabna. Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, joined the event virtually. He described the development as a new milestone for Bangladesh, adding that it would further accelerate the country’s economic progress.

At the ceremony, Minister for Science and Technology Fakir Mahbub Anam stated that all activities are being carried out in accordance with international standards, emphasizing that safety is Bangladesh’s top priority. He also noted that the nuclear plant would further strengthen the historic ties between Dhaka and Moscow.

Director General of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, said that the support provided to Bangladesh in building the nuclear power plant would continue in the future. He reassured the people of Bangladesh regarding safety, noting that the plant uses the most advanced technology and highest standards. He also confirmed continued cooperation in areas including waste management.

The Prime Minister’s Adviser on Science and Technology, Rehan Asif Asad, described the day as significant for Bangladesh, saying the country has taken another step forward technologically.

Science and Technology Secretary Anwar Hossain said the Rooppur project has created opportunities for technological transformation and will further advance Bangladesh’s scientific capabilities.

With the insertion of uranium fuel into the first unit, Bangladesh has entered the ranks of nuclear power-generating nations. The country is now the 33rd in the world to use uranium for electricity generation.

The total installed capacity of the project is 2,400 megawatts, which is expected to play a significant role in meeting the country’s electricity demand.

Experts believe the nuclear power plant will help ensure long-term, uninterrupted, and stable electricity supply. Energy analysts also say it will strengthen the country’s energy security and reduce reliance on gas and imported fuels, while contributing to economic growth.

Overall, stakeholders view the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant not just as a project, but as the beginning of a new era in Bangladesh’s energy sector.
