State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit has said that if fuel prices decline in the international market, they will also be reduced in Bangladesh. He stated that the government was compelled to adjust fuel prices due to global market realities and the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
The State Minister made these remarks on Monday while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat in response to a question regarding the recent increase in fuel prices.
He said that the government had to make a new price adjustment decision because of recent international developments and fluctuations in global fuel prices.
“The government never wants to increase fuel prices unnecessarily,” he said. “However, considering the international market situation and the impact of instability in the Middle East, circumstances have arisen where price adjustments were unavoidable in some cases. Diesel receives the highest amount of subsidy. To reduce the burden on ordinary people, the price of diesel has once again been kept unchanged. Nevertheless, due to the prevailing situation, price adjustments have been necessary for several other fuel products.”
The State Minister further said that if prices in the global market decrease, the government will take prompt decisions to ease the suffering of consumers.
From today, Monday, the prices of kerosene, petrol, and octane have been increased by Tk 5 per litre, while the price of diesel remains unchanged.
