Instructions Given to Take Legal Action

LPG: Artificial Shortage Created Following Advance News of Price Hike

Staff Correspondent, Dhaka (Sunday, 4 January 2025)

The Energy and Mineral Resources Division has stated that there is an adequate stock of LPG gas in the country. However, local retail sellers have created an artificial shortage in the market following advance news of a possible price hike.

According to a press release issued after a meeting at the Energy and Mineral Resources Division on Sunday, the administration has been instructed to take legal action against those responsible for creating the artificial crisis.

Representatives of the LPG Owners’ Association and LPG operators were present at the meeting, which was chaired by the Energy Secretary.

During the meeting, leaders of the LPG Association and importers stated that retail sellers created the shortage after learning that the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) might increase the price of LPG cylinders this month.

On Sunday, BERC increased the price of a 12-kg LPG cylinder from Tk 1,253 to Tk 1,306.

It was also reported that LPG imports amounted to 105,000 metric tons in November 2025, while imports in December stood at 127,000 metric tons. Despite higher imports, there is no logical reason for a reduction in LPG supply in the market.

The press release further noted that initiatives have been taken to discuss and resolve several demands of the association, including simplification of letters of credit (LCs) and reduction of VAT.

To normalize the situation, requests have been made—through the Cabinet Division and the Ministry of Home Affairs—to take measures for conducting mobile courts by district and upazila administrations.

It was also stated that private entrepreneurs import nearly 98 percent of the country’s LPG demand.

Out of 32 licensed companies, 15 import LPG. From January to December 2025, these 15 companies imported 1,258,152 metric tons of LNG (as stated in the report).
