The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) is set to announce new electricity tariffs just five working days after holding public hearings. The revised electricity prices will be announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Public hearings were held on May 20 and 21. Afterward, there were only three working days before the Eid holidays. The new tariffs are being announced immediately after government offices reopened following the holiday.
Never before have electricity tariffs been announced so quickly after a hearing. Under existing regulations, BERC is required to announce its decision within 90 days of the hearing.
According to BERC sources, electricity prices may be increased for nearly all categories of consumers, including irrigation and industrial users.
The commission will announce revised tariffs for wholesale electricity supplied by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), transmission charges, and retail electricity rates charged to end-users by distribution utilities.
In a notice, BERC stated that its decisions regarding proposals to revise wholesale, transmission, and retail electricity tariffs will be announced on Wednesday.
The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) submitted proposals for changes to wholesale (bulk) and retail electricity tariffs. Power Grid Bangladesh PLC (PGBPLC) proposed revisions to electricity transmission charges. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB), Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC), Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (DESCO), West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited (WZPDCL), and Northern Electricity Supply PLC (NESCO) submitted proposals to revise retail electricity tariffs.
Public hearings on these proposals were held on May 20 and 21.
BERC will announce its decisions on the proposals at 3:00 PM on Wednesday.
