Power Generation Capacity in the Country Now Nearly 29,000 MW: Minister in Parliament

Staff Correspondent, Dhaka (Thursday, April 2, 2026)

At present, a total of 136 power plants—both public and private—are operational across the country. The combined installed generation capacity of these plants stands at 28,919 megawatts (MW). Depending on daily demand, an average of 14,500 to 15,000 MW of electricity is being generated each day.
This information was provided by State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, in response to a question from Cox’s Bazar-3 Member of Parliament Lutfur Rahman in the National Parliament on Thursday.
The minister stated that both the public and private sectors play a significant role in the country’s power generation. Currently, there are 64 government-owned power plants with a total capacity of 12,302 MW. In addition, 69 power plants have been established under private ownership, with a combined capacity of 10,853 MW. There are also three large power plants under joint public-private ownership, contributing 3,068 MW.
Altogether, the country’s current installed power generation capacity stands at 28,919 MW.
He further noted that although the capacity is close to 29,000 MW, actual electricity generation depends primarily on daily demand. Based on current demand, these plants are producing an average of 14,500 to 15,000 MW of electricity per day.
