Shopping Malls Ordered to Close After 7 PM Again to Save Electricity

Staff Correspondent, Dhaka (Monday, June 1, 2026)

To conserve electricity, all shopping malls and retail stores across the country have once again been instructed to close by 7:00 PM. In addition, the illumination of all roadside billboards must be switched off after this time. Fairs, trade fairs, and cultural events must also conclude by 7:00 PM.
On Monday, the Coordination-2 Branch of the Power Division issued a directive in this regard and sent it to the mayors and administrators of all city corporations, divisional commissioners, and deputy commissioners across the country.
According to the new directive, the special relaxation granted for the Eid period has expired, and the previous restrictions have been reinstated from June 1. As a result, all shopping malls, markets, and stores must end their operations by 7:00 PM instead of remaining open until 10:00 PM.
The directive further states that, in order to ensure electricity savings, the lights of all types of billboards must be turned off by 7:00 PM. The same time limit will also apply to fairs, trade fairs, and cultural events held throughout the country.
A temporary decision had previously been made to allow shopping malls and stores to remain open until 10:00 PM to facilitate business activities during the Eid-ul-Adha season.
