Special Meeting on Energy: Prime Minister Reviews Capacity

A special meeting on “Measures to Address the Energy Situation” was held with Prime Minister Tareq Rahman in the chair. The meeting took place at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister reviewed the overall energy situation and assessed the country’s capacity and ongoing activities.
Following the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani briefed reporters at a press conference held at the Department of Information. Responding to journalists’ questions, he said the Prime Minister had evaluated the government’s capacity. He also stated that there is no energy crisis in the country and that there is a 30-day fuel stock.
He added that the Prime Minister examined how fuel supply is being managed and what measures the ministry has taken. According to the Cabinet Secretary, the country currently has sufficient fuel reserves. Previously, the stock was typically maintained for 15 days, but now it has been increased to around one month, with efforts underway to expand it further.
Mentioning that people are buying fuel out of panic, Nasimul Ghani said that confidence will likely return among the public in a few days, easing the situation. He also said he is not aware of any rumors regarding an increase in fuel prices and sees no indication of such a move.
Among those present at the meeting were Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit, Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain, Agriculture Minister Mohammad Aminur Rashid, Civil Aviation Minister Afroza Khan, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, and secretaries of the relevant ministries.
The Cabinet meeting also approved drafts of five laws: the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty (Amendment) Act; the Finance Act (FY 2025–26); the Financial-Related Certain Amendments (FY 2025–26) Act; the Excise and Salt (Amendment) Act; and the Financial-Related Certain (Second Amendment) Act.
