Staff Correspondent, Dhaka (Friday, April 3, 2026)

Under an integrated strategy of the Power Division, a target has been set to save around 3,100 megawatts (MW) of electricity.

To implement this plan, priority will be given to irrigation in agriculture, fertilizer production and industrial output.

It has been decided to reduce the use of fuel, electricity, and gas in government offices by 30 percent.

This information was disclosed in a press release issued by the Cabinet Division on Friday.

The initiative has been taken to address the ongoing global energy and power crisis.

Earlier on Thursday, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani briefed journalists on the matter following a cabinet meeting at the media center of the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) in Dhaka.

He said that, in light of the ongoing tensions and conflict in the Middle East, the government reviewed the impact on fuel oil, gas, electricity, and fertilizer sectors, along with short-, medium-, and long-term strategies and financing plans prepared by the Finance Division.

As part of the coordinated strategy, the target of saving প্রায় 3,100 MW of electricity daily has been set.

To sustain industrial growth, emphasis has been placed on ensuring uninterrupted supply of necessary energy on a priority basis.

All types of decorative lighting will be prohibited across the country for the next three months. To raise public awareness about energy-saving measures, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will carry out campaigns through print and electronic media. Mobile courts will be deployed where necessary.

Except for emergency services, all office buildings, shopping malls, and commercial establishments must close by 6:00 pm.

The Ministry of Education will consult stakeholders and present a proposal at the next cabinet meeting regarding implementation of energy-saving plans in educational institutions.

The Cabinet Secretary also said that, to reduce fuel use and environmental pollution, the government has approved duty-free import of brand-new electric buses for registered educational institutions, and a total of 20 percent duty for others. Vehicles emitting black smoke and those that have exceeded their service life will be gradually removed from roads.

To reduce government operational costs, the Prime Minister, ministers, and state ministers will cut their allocated fuel usage for official vehicles by 30 percent.

Until further notice, interest-free loans for purchasing vehicles by government officials and all foreign training funded by the government will remain suspended. Apart from training costs, domestic training expenses must be reduced by 50 percent.

Expenditure on hospitality for meetings and seminars must be reduced by 50 percent, and seminar and conference costs by 20 percent. Additionally, travel expenses will be reduced by 30 percent, while government spending on the purchase of vehicles, watercraft, aircraft, and computers will be completely halted.
