The government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore based Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd for setting up a 1,400-megawwat (MW) coal-fired power plant in joint venture (JV) at Matarbari of Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar.
Managing Director of Coal Power Generation Company of Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) Engineer M Abul Quasem and Executive Vice President and Head Group Business Development of Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, Singapore signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides at Bidyut Bhaban here today.
According to the MoU, Coal Power Generation Company of Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) and Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd will set up the power plant having capacity of 700-MW in phase-I and another 700-MW in phase-II on 50:50 equity basis.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid attended the MoU signing ceremony as the chief guest while secretary of power division Monowar Islam, chairman of Rural Electrification Board (REB) Major General Moin Uddin, Singapore High Commissioner in Dhaka and Bangladesh Power Development Board Chairman KM Hasan were present.
According to the project details, Sembcorp Utilities Ple Ltd will set up coal fired power plants under a project “700-MW Matarbari Coal Fired Power Plant project (Phase-I)” at Matarbari.
The power plant would be built using Ultra Supercritical Technology and authorities expect to complete it by December 2022.
