The government has made a shortlist for appointing a consultant to conduct feasibility study for the proposed two land-based Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminals at Moheshkhali and Paira.
“The government decided to set up land based and floating LNG terminals aimed at ensuring energy security in the country and meeting the growing demand,” state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid told Energy Bangla Monday.
He said the ministry decided to appoint consultant for feasibility study of the two LNG terminals, having capacity of 1,000 mmcf gas, as it was a new and technical project in the country.
According to an official, a steering committee on technical assistance for natural gas transmission and distribution, development and investment programme led by energy and mineral resources division secretary today shortlisted seven farms to recruit a consultant for feasibility study of the 2-land-based LNG terminals.
A total of 25 farms submitted Expression of Interest (EOI) for getting consultancy to conduct feasibility study of the project, he said.
The second meeting of the steering committee was held at the ministry conference room with secretary in charge in the chair and made the shortlist.
Besides, the energy ministry formed an eight member evaluation committee on February 28 and they submitted their recommendations after scrutinizing the EOI, the official said.
He added the government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina decided to set up land based and floating LNG terminals aimed at ensuring energy security in the country and meeting the growing demand.
As a new and technical project in the country, the government decided to appoint consultant for feasibility study and then the ministry invited EOI for consultant of the project.
Earlier, the government instructed the state-owned Petrobangla to take preparation for setting up two land-based LNG terminals having capacity 1,000 million metre cubic feet (mmcf) at Moheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar and Paira in Patuakhali, which would implement by the Petrobangla, the official said.
He said the purpose of setting up the terminal is to import LNG, so that the country does not have to face any sudden energy crisis because of supply shortfall in the near future.
