1.5 Crore Rural Families Have Electricity

EB Report

Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB or REB) has counted its consumer crossing 1.5 crores. Earlier REB launched a program of introducing at least 1 lac new electricity connections each month and they are successful. In fact, in the last April of this year, REB instantiated 2 lac 61 thousand and 58 new connections throughout the country and thus REB crossed the 1.5 crore landmark.

According to REB, currently, Palli Biddyut Samity (PBS) has a total number of 1 crore 52 lac 66 thousand consumers throughout the country.

The chairman of REB Brig Gen Main Uddin said it was possible to bring this large number of families under electricity access due to the heartiest effort by all related personnel. Officials from 78 PBS are responsible for this and they altogether made it possible. He further said that to build an enlightened country, REB is expanding its transmission lines besides providing new connections. To implement the proclaimed ‘Vision-2021’, REB has the plan to ensure electricity for 90 percent of families of the country within 2018. In the current fiscal year of 2015-16, there is a plan to bring a total number of 30 lacs new consumers under electricity access. To achieve the goals that were set by Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), REB wishes to play their part by providing electricity connections to 60 lacs of new families within the year of 2021.
