Bangladesh gets verdict on maritime dispute with India

Bangladesh today received the international tribunal verdict on its maritime boundary dispute with India which will be made public tomorrow, a foreign office spokesman said.

“Yes, we have received the verdict, which is now being reviewed at the appropriate level,” the spokesman told BSS.

Director General of external publicity at the Foreign Ministry Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury said, “we will make the verdict public tomorrow after the review”.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration based in Hague of the Netherlands last year concluded the hearing when both Bangladesh and India made their submissions while the decision was made after a review of the arguments in the past six months.

Bangladesh in 2010 decided to go for international arbitration in line with the provisions of United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the ongoing discussions with India and Myanmar could not yield the expected results.

The German-based International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) verdict two years ago on dispute with Myanmar largely came to Bangladesh’s favour on the basis of ‘equitable’ solutions.

A separate case was filed against India with the court in Hague.

Bangladesh was pursuing the same ‘equitable’ solution formula with India, which has been advocating for equidistance formula that limits Bangladesh maritime area in the Bay of Bengal.
