Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) thursday signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for buying 635 megawatt power from Gazaria coalfired power plant in Munshiganj district.
Secretary of BPDB Zahurul Haque and Managing Director of Orion Group Salman Obaidul Karim signed the contracts on behalf of their compnay.
“The government has diversified primary fuel and We have a target to generate 5,000 MW power from liquid fuel,” Power division secretary Monowar Islam said.
He said currently two percent electricity is being generated from coal,” he said while witnessing the signing ceremony at Bijoy Hall of Bidyut Bhaban here.
Assuring the government Orion Group Chairman Obaidul Karim said the coal based power plant would go for commercial operation before its scheduled period.
“We hope that the 635 MW coal fired power plant would begin its commercial operation within this tenure of the government. The coal based power plant would not affect environment,” he said.
Chairman of BPDB M Shamsul Hasan Miah highlighted the project and said the government would procure power from Orion Power Unit-2 Dhaka Limited at Taka 6.69 per unit.
According to the contract, signed for 25 years, the Orion Group would set up the coal fired power plant using ultra supercritical technology to keep the environment free from pollution.
