Chevron Bangladesh kicked off its blood donation drives for 2014 on June 10th Donor Day. On Day 1, employees of the Bibiyana gas field donated 349 bags, followed by Dhaka office staff the next day, who collectively contributed 120 bags of blood. With 469 bags already collected, and drives scheduled later this month for employees from the Jalalabad and Moulavi Bazar gas plants and Muchai Compression Project, this year’s response has already exceeded last year’s by 74%. The daylong drive in Dhaka was inaugurated by Chevron Bangladesh President, Geoff Strong.
It is estimated that the annual need for blood in Bangladesh is 600,000 units. Blood transfusions may be needed in the course of surgeries or by patients afflicted by a wide range of ailments, including haemophilia, dengue, blood-cancer, thalassaemia. Unfortunately, the number of voluntary donors is not able to keep pace with the yearly requirement. To fulfill the acute need for safe blood in this country, a large number of Chevron staff come forward each year. This year, the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society officially recognized Chevron Bangladesh as the largest voluntary blood donor organization for the last fiscal year.
