A high-level legal team from Chevron, led by Mark Jones, General Counsel for Asia-Pacific, handed over a state-of-the-art x-ray machine to one of the three Smiling Sun clinics
that Chevron supports around its operational areas in Northeastern Bangladesh. Also in attendance
were Kimya Lyon, wife of Chevron Bangladesh President Kevin Lyon; Melissa Jones, wife of Mark
Jones; Joseph Tomkiewicz, General Counsel for Chevron Asia-South; Chijioke Emole and Naser
Ahmed, Chevron Bangladesh’s Legal and External Affairs Directors.
The new mobile x-ray system will provide high-quality images of critical anatomies. Unlike traditional
x-ray systems, the ultra-high frequency technology of the mobile unit means lower radiation doses,
making it safe for newborns. Visiting from Singapore, Mark Jones said, “The Smiling Sun clinics are a
great example of an efficient, well-run community health care practice, and I’m so glad I’ve been able
to see one for myself here in Bibiyana. Innovative technologies are key, especially in medicine, and I
hope this new x-ray machine will play an important role in speedy and accurate diagnosis of visitors to
the clinic.”
This network of three community clinics and 34 satellite spots provide over 100,000 services a year.
Implemented by international NGO, Pathfinder International, the clinics are under the nationwide
USAID-sponsored Smiling Sun Franchise Program. The clinics deliver quality, affordable healthcare
right to the doorsteps of the community, offering maternal & child health care, family-planning,
immunization, general laboratory & diagnostic services, and ultra-sonogram.
The visit ended with a brief tour of the clinic premises. The visitors were shown around by Wakarul
Haque Nazvi, Project Coordinator at Pathfinder International; Belal Ahmed, Executive Director of
implementing partner Sylhet Samaj Kalyan Sangstha (SSKS), and Field Community Engagement Manager,
Malay Kumar Sarker, among others.
