“Shurakkha”, a comprehensive road-safety and defensive driving program for commercial bus & truck drivers, jointly organized by BRAC and Chevron in collaboration with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), was recently inaugurated at a local hotel in Sylhet. This forms part of a larger initiative that targets communities living near Chevron’s Bibiyana gas field and in Habiganj District, and aims to boost defensive-driving skills, increase awareness on safe pedestrian behaviors, and promote social responsibility.
The ceremonial inauguration was followed by a panel discussion where the discussants included BRTA Chairman, Nazrul Islam; BRAC’s Director, Administration & Road Safety Programme, Ahmed Najmul Hussain; Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Md. Kamrul Ahsan, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner, Md. Shahidul Islam; Chevron’s External Affairs Director, Naser Ahmed; Sylhet District Transport Workers’ Union Chairman, Md. Selim Ahmed Folik, and Sylhet Bus Owners’ Association Secretary, Alhajj Jamir Ahmed.
In areas where they operate, Chevron Bangladesh invests in activities and programs that focus primarily on economic development, education and health care. Its social investment initiatives affect the lives of approximately 30,000 people in Bangladesh.
