Coal Crisis Forced Matarbari Power Plant To Shutdown

EB Report

The authorities of the Matarbari coal power plant have shut production of two units due to coal crisis as the 1200MW power plan is fully depend on imported coal.

Coal Power Generation Company Officials said, “The power generation has been suspended since Thursday due to some maintenance work and coal crisis.”

Earlier in September, the authorities have warned that if coal imports are not resumed within a month, power generation will stop.

However, authorities are hopeful that production will resume in November.

Authorities say that the coal shortage should be resolved by the end of November, once a new shipment arrives.

The last coal shipment from Sumitomo Corporation was received in mid-August. So far, 2.2 million tons of coal have been imported through Sumitomo, but that stock is now depleted.

The first unit of the Matarbari power plant began operation in July 2023, and the second in December.
