Another coal-based Power Plant with a capacity of 320 MW is going to be installed in the Island of Maheshkhali of Cox’sbazaar.
This time the coal-fired plant will be a product of a Joint Venture company with a partner from China named SEPCO.
Power Development Board (PDB) of Bangladesh and SEPCO Electric Power Construction Corporation of China have signed a MoU on Monday to install this Power Plant. Minhaz Uddin Ahmed one of the members of PDB, Sayed Jahangir the chairman of Omega Power Ltd., Badrujjaman the chairman of Genith Power and other high officials were present at the MoU signing ceremony held at the Energy division’s office.
The secretary of PDB Md. Zahurul Haque and the president of SEPCO Leo Chou Ming signed at the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations. Minhaz Uddin said that the final deal will be signed very soon and a company will be formed subsequently.
Instances are available in the recent times on forming a Joint Venture company to install Power Plants. Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company is one of them and it is going to install the power plant of Rampal. Maheshkhali’s new coal-fired power plant will be a similar type joint venture attempt. Forming a joint venture of National Machinery Import and corporation (CMC) of china and North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL) to install the power plant of Payra is another example. Government has a plan to install a total number of 24 coal-fired power plants with a grand capacity of 21 thousand 785 MW in the country within the year of 2030.
