A fire has erupted in the Sundarbans on Sunday night and forest officials say it is yet to be tamed until Monday morning.
The forest fire has been reported from the Dhan Sagar Station’s Nangli Forset Camp in the Chandpai Range.
Dhan Sagar Station Conservator Sultan Mahmud said a fire-fighting unit from Bagerhat’s Morelganj is now on the spot.
He said their personnel spotted a fire in the jungle on the night of Sunday. “They tried to put it using water from the nearby rivers, but it did not work.”
The fire service was informed when the flames started to spread in the morning, said the Forest Department official.
There are no reports of casualties until now and it could not be known immediately how much area of the jungle was affected by the fire.
Forest fires have been reported from the jungle’s Chandpai and Sharankhola ranges in the past, especially when the spring ends and the summer approaches.
Gusty winds, during this part of the year, make it harder to control such fires.
In 2011, two acres of forest in Chandpai Range was destroyed in a fire .
In 2014, another five acres at the same range was destroyed by another fire.
