The government is planning to use the abandoned Sangu platform in the Bay of Bengal for importing LNG or CNG gas to meet the country’s growing natural gas demand.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Division held a meeting in this regard on Tuesday with its secretary Md Nazimuddin in the chair.
Sangu, the first offshore gas field in the country, run by Australian oil and gas exploration company Santos, was shut down permanently in October 2013 as its reserves was running out fast.
At the meeting, the Energy Secretary asked the officials concerned to assess the feasibility of using the Sangu platform for importing LNG and CNG.
The government has already decided to set up three land-based LNG terminals and a floating storage and re-gasification unit (FSRU) to increase the country’s gas supply. LNG is mostly used for electricity generation. Officials concerned said the existing Sangu platform stands eight metres water depth in the Bay of Bengal.
“We will examine how we can make the best use of the platform,” officials said, adding that the ministry has already asked Petrobangla to prepare a report on the ways of using the Sangu platform.
Besides, a high-powered team from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division will also visit Iran to gather more technical know-how on such project.
