The High Court (HC) issued a rule asking why the price of Liquefied
Petroleum Gas (LPG) should not be readjusted in the wake global price
drop.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) chairman has been
ordered to respond to the rule within four weeks.
The HC bench headed by Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam and Khosruzzaaman
issued the rule on Sunday. Lawyer Md. Saiful Alam was the petitioner’s
lawyer.
Earlier a writ petition was filed by the Consumers Association of
Bangladesh (CAB) claiming that the price of liquefied petroleum gas
(LPG) in the domestic market has not been readjusted in last seven
years despite the fall of LPG price in international market.
On 2009, for the last time, BERC defined the price of LPG at 700 BDT
for every 12.5 Kg LPG cylinder. Since then, the price was never
readjusted for the last 7 years, though the global price has been
falling significantly for the last couple of years. In a situation
like this CAB showed up demanding re-adjustment of the price of LPG in
accordance with the global price. However, initially CAB applied to
BERC on 31st July of this year to adjust the price but BERC had not
responded yet.
