A technical fault at one of the floating LNG terminals off Maheshkhali has reduced gas supply to the national grid by nearly half, worsening the country’s ongoing gas crisis. Residential, commercial, and industrial consumers across Dhaka and other parts of the country are experiencing severe gas shortages. Many CNG filling stations in the capital have remained closed for extended periods due to low gas pressure.
A significant portion of Bangladesh’s gas supply comes from imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). After being regasified, the imported LNG is supplied to the national pipeline network through two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) located offshore. However, one of the two terminals has been completely shut down due to a technical fault, suspending the supply of approximately 450 million cubic feet of gas per day (MMcfd).
Against a national demand of around 4 billion cubic feet of gas per day (Bcfd), the current supply has fallen to just over 2 billion cubic feet, leaving nearly 40 percent of the country’s gas demand unmet.
The reduced supply has caused widespread hardship. Several CNG filling stations in the capital have been forced to suspend operations due to insufficient gas pressure, while many others are operating intermittently. Motorists are having to wait for long hours to refill their vehicles.
A visit to several CNG stations revealed that the Hazipara CNG Station in Dhaka remained closed around noon as gas had not been available since early morning. Even by evening, gas supply had not resumed. Several nearby CNG stations were also found to be closed. The Tejgaon City CNG Station was also seen shut during the afternoon.
Petrobangla said its engineers are working to repair the technical fault and expressed hope that normal gas supply will be restored soon.
Md. Rafiqul Islam, Director (Engineering) of Petrobangla, said repair work at the floating LNG terminal off Maheshkhali is underway, adding that he expects gas supply to return to normal as quickly as possible.
