Electricity generation at the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in Dinajpur has come to a complete Shutdown due to mechanical faults.
Chief Engineer Abu Bakar Siddique told bdnews24.com that power generation at Unit 1 stopped on Sunday morning after a boiler pipe burst. Following the shutdown of Unit 3 earlier, around 50 megawatts of electricity from Unit 1 had been supplied to the national grid.
Earlier, on the morning of October 16, production at Unit 3 was suspended.
According to the chief engineer, the “steam sensors” of four turbines in the governor valve of Unit 3 have become inoperative. Efforts are underway to restart both units, but it will take at least a week to resume generation.
The three-unit power plant has a total capacity of 525 megawatts. Among them, two units have a capacity of 125 megawatts each, while the third unit can produce 275 megawatts. In the past 15 years, all three units have never operated simultaneously.
Since late 2020, the 125-megawatt Unit 2 has remained out of operation.
Until recently, the plant had been supplying 170–180 megawatts from the 275-megawatt Unit 3 and about 50 megawatts from the 125-megawatt Unit 1 to the national grid.
