Power Sector On Top Of The Priority List

Country’s power sector has been placed on top of the priority list and it will be there from now on to through the next three years. The power sector will remain in the top position from the FY of 2017-18 to the FY of 2019-20 to ensure access to electricity for everyone within the year of 2021.

The plan of putting the power sector on the top position of the priority list was disclosed in the Medium-term Macroeconomic Policy Statement (2017-18-19-20) of the government.

According to the statement, the government has planned to raise the allotment in the power sector by 20.6 percent in each of the three fiscal years to come. The power sector may get 225.53 billion BDT alone in the FY of 2019-20.

The plan was taken to ensure access to electricity for everyone within the year of 2021 which was destined by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The government has also revised and escalated their goals in the power sector as now the government has a plan to generate 24,000 MW of electricity instead of 20,000 MW within the year of 2021. Besides, the government has also planned to upgrade the target of generating electricity from 34,000 MW to 40,000 MW within the year of 2030.
