REB to provide electricity to all pending applicants

EB Report

Rural Electrification Board (REB) Chairman Brigadier General Moin Uddin on Saturday directed his officials to provide power connections to all pending domestic consumers without hassle by June.
“Accelerate your activities so that the consumers seeking power connections get their demand met,” the REB boss asked the Deputy General Managers of 72 REB Samities who attended a conference held at the REB office in Dhaka.
Pointing out to a huge amount of money that is lying idle in banks such Samities deposited with, the REB chief asked the DGMs to ultise this money to improve the system as a consumer-friendly one.
REB is pledge-bound to provide electricity as fast as possible to a consumer who applies for power connection, Moin Uddin further said, warning against any lapses in this regard.
He denied any load-shedding in REB areas.
“Because of a weak distribution system, people face a bit load- shedding,” he said. He also assured the DGMs of providing all logistic support for improving the system and public service.
He regretted accidents that occurred due to non-appropriate shutdown at the time of repairing electric line and suggested DGMs should be careful.
There are allegations of widespread corruption in REB Samities by some DGMs and their co-workers.
Pointing his finger at the allegations of bribery raised by consumers against the REB officials, the board chief warned that  any official found guilty would face severe punitive action.
The government has set a goal to provide electricity to all by 2021. To achieve the goal, REB is trying to ensure access of electricity to 90 per cent consumers by 2018. REB has to give 1.20 lakh power connections every month.
