First batch of 10 Bangladeshi students begin their academic career at the Russia’s legendary university of National Research Nuclear University (MEPhi). Students will undergo 6 years course on physics.
Earlier the students were awarded full scholarship to study in the field of nuclear science, after winning a Physics Olympiad, held in Dhaka in 2013. Supported by Russia’s State Nuclear Power Corporation-Rosatom, the Olympiad Jury Committee consisting of representatives from Rosatom and MEPhI, selected winners based on their knowledge in chemistry, physics, English, etc.
The Olympiad was also supported by the Soviet and Russian Alumni Association of Bangladesh students and Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Dhaka. Over 700 Bangladeshi students took part in the Olympiad. It was a perfect chance for Bangladeshi students to become an industry specialist and contribute to the future development of the nuclear industry in their own country.
During 6 years, Bangladeshi students will study physics, chemistry and other relevant subjects of nuclear industry at the legendary university, 5 alumni of which were awarded Nobel prizes. They will also become part of social and cultural exchange program – throughout the year.
In November 2011, Russia and Bangladesh signed an intergovernmental agreement on building the first ever nuclear power plant at Rooppur. Russia will design, build and commission two units with VVER reactors, each of 1000-megawatt capacity. Russia will also assist in preparing and training nuclear specialists for Bangladesh under the contract.
