Negotiations With Adani Power Tariff Talks Fail

Tariff negotiation meeting between Power Division and Adani Power Ltd, the Indian business conglomerate, ended inconclusively on Thursday.
Power Division Secretary and the Adani officials failed to reach a conclusion as Adani insisted on capacity charge and all other facilities offered to IPP project although it was an issue of power import, a Power Division official told.
“They also raised the issue of investment,” the official added. However, the committee will sit soon to settle the issue, he added.
As per the proposal, Adani said they would invest US$2.1billion to set up the proposed power plant in Jharkhand to export 1,600 MW of electricity to Bangladesh for a 25-year term.
After signing the MoU Adani Power Ltd offered Tk 6.85 per unit as tariff for exporting electricity from its proposed plant in Jharkhand. On August 15 in 2015, the government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian firm to import electricity.
Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had directed the Power Division to settle the tariff issue under the Speedy Supply of Power and Energy Act.
According to the Power Division, Adani wants to invest in developing infrastructures in Bangladesh’s power transmission in partnership with the state-run Power Grid Company, which plans to invest over $7 billion in the next four years.
Meanwhile, Adani Transmission Ltd wrote to the Power Division expressing its interest to invest in power transmission business.
The Power Division, they said, was also planning to frame a policy to facilitate the entry of private companies in the power transmission business, which till now is a monopoly of the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh.
The government plans to allow private companies in power transmission and distribution, according to the Power Division.
