The new 400-kV transmission line from Bibiyana to Kaliakoir which was
constructed by the Power Grid Company Bangladesh Limited (PGCB) has
started its operation. This is the first of its kind of transmission
line in the country with a capacity of 400-kV.
The transmission line started its operation from today. It added
around 1,000 MW of more electricity to the national grid. Power plants
of the Bibiyana and Sylhet region are now connected to the national
grid through this transmission line.
This new line passes over Nabiganj, Baniachang, and Ajmeriganj
Upazilas of Habiganj district, Itna, Mithamoin, Nikli, Karimganj,
Kotiadi, and Pakundia Upazilas of Kishorganj, Gafargaon upazila of
Mymensingh, and Kapasia, Sripur, Gazipur Sadar, and Kaliakor Upazilas
of Gazipur district.
PGCB has constructed two 400-/230-kV grid substations at the two ends
of the Bibiyana–Kaliakoir line. The length of this new transmission
line is 168 km. It has been constructed under the 400-kV
Bibiyana–Kaliakoir and 230-kV Bibiyana–Fenchuganj line development
projects.
The new line will work as a backbone line between Dhaka and Sylhet.
There are several state-owned and privately-owned power plants in
Bibiyana and many other small and medium-sized power plants in the
rest of the Sylhet region.
However, the project has been materialized with a joint funding from
PGCB’s own funds, government and the Korean Economic Development Fund
(EDCF) from the Korean government.
