‘Electricity week’ launched

EB Report

mamunPresident Abdul Hamid yesterday urged the people to stop misuses of electricity so that others would be able to get electricity when needed. “Don’t think I could use electricity as per wish, yes you may able to pay for it but don’t forget you have a responsibility for your society and the nation. If you stop the misuse of electricity, the precious thing is that other people would get chance to enjoy it,” the president said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the three-day “Electricity Week-2014” at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital. “As a responsible citizen of the country, everyone should contribute to ensuring the future energy security as electricity is a very precious thing. So we should use the resources in a manner so that we would be able to contribute to our future generation,” the president said. The power division has been organising the electricity week for the last three years to create awareness among the consumers in saving energy. The division also awarded many organizations, students, media persons for their contribution to the power sector.
This year, nine people including three journalists were awarded for their contributions to the power sector.
The journalists are: Rafiqul Bashar of the Daily Samakal, Rashid mamun of the daily Janakanthya, and Iqbal Ahsan of private television Channel 24. Also present, state minister for power energy and mineral resources Nasrul Haid said Bangladesh has set a target to produce around 800 watts of electricity from renewable resources by 2015 as the dependency on gas should be reduced given that the reserve of gas in the country is declining.
“Our total generation plan is dependent on gas. Although we are planning to go for energy mix, we need to start our journey towards energy saving and using renewable sources like hydro-wind-bio gas and enhance energy cooperation with the neighbouring countries so that we would be able to ensure our energy security,” the state minister said.
At present, about 68 percent people are getting electricity and we plan to bring the rest of the population under electricity coverage by 2021 if the present pace of development continues, observed the state minister.
About 98 organizations opened stalls at the programme where they are exhibiting their equipment to the people. Dhaka Power Distribution Company also opened a one-stop service centre at the venue where people would be able to process the procedures for getting electricity connections, and resolve problems related to their electricity bills.
Among others, power division secretary Monwar Islam, and chairman of the standing committee on power, energy and mineral resources Tazul Islam, were present at the programme.
