Gas Crisis To End By 2018, Says Muhith

The prevailing gas crisis will be resolved by 2018 as the government is giving all-out efforts to address the issue with utmost importance, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said on Thursday.
The minister made the remarks while talking to journalists after a meeting with a delegation of Foreign Investors’ Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) at his office. FICCI President Rupali Chowdhury led the business delegation.
“We expect that import of liquid natural gas (LNG) and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) will get easier by the end 2018,” Muhith said, adding “A LNG terminal is being constructed for LNG re-gasification to supply more gas to the national grid.”
At the meeting, the FICCI President urged the minister to take necessary steps for resolving gas crisis, improve the electricity transmission system and develop necessary infrastructure to attract more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
Mentioning that the budget proposed a cut in the investment allowances from 30 percent of total income to 20 percent and reduced rebate on investment from 15 percent to 10 percent based on income level, the chamber recommended for reviewing the decisions on limiting the investment opportunities for salaried persons.
The trade body also suggested deducting tax on invoice price only and withdrawal of the proposed provision to add VAT with base price.
