Speakers at a seminar on solar energy on Wednesday urged the government to take more initiatives to promote renewable energy across the country, particularly in the off-grid areas.
“Rural people in the off-grid areas can get electricity at low-cost price if the government takes the initiative. There is huge potential of solar power to be utilised for small and agro-based industries,” said Dr. Khandaker Mokaddem Hossain, pro-vice chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU), while speaking at the seminar at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban in Dhaka University in the city.
Department of Social Research of University of Helsinki, BOU and Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability (IDMV) jointly organised the seminar titled `Solar Energy in the context of sustainable market` with Dr. Mahbubul Nasreen in the chair.
Dr. Munjur E Moula of Helsinki University made a presentation at the seminar while Dr. Abdul Hai of the same university spoke on the occasion.
They said that they would set up a community-based solar power project with planning to provide low-cost electricity.
