A petition was filed challenging the legality of the transformation of
Power Development Board (PDB) in Rajshahi and Rangpur region into a
company named North West Zone Power Distribution Company (NWZDC). The
High court on Monday dismissed the petition filed against the
formation of the new company.
The HC bench headed by the judge Md. Rezaul Haque and judge Md.
Jahangir Hossain rejected the petition in a hearing held on October
4th saying that it ‘Did not appear’.
Md. Abdul Mannan was the petitioner, who filed it on 26th September.
The HC held its first and second hearing on consecutively Sunday and
Monday last. Amit Talukder, deputy attorney general was the prosecutor
in the hearing while Abdul Matin Khasru was the petitioner’s lawyer.
Amit Talukder said that, already a writ petition was executed on that
issue, so no more petition would be in act. Abdul Matin Khasru told
the court that his client will not proceed with the petition, as the
board in the zones has already been turned into NWZDC
On August 1, PDB and NWZDC signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU)
and agreed to turn PDB in Rajshahi and Rangpur into NWZDC. However,
the petitioner claimed that, the PDB had not much legal ground to
materialize the new company by signing such MoU, as it goes against
the 59th presidential order-‘Transfer of state resources to
stakeholders’ 1972.
