PDB seeks Tk 7,500cr subsidy for next fiscal

Shahnaj Begum

Power Development Board has sought Tk 7,500 crore as subsidy from the Finance Ministry for the next fiscal year (2015-16) to run its power projects in a proper manner, according to officials at the Power Division.
Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) has also sought a Tk 800 crore subsidy, although it made a Tk 2000 crore profit in the current fiscal year (2014-15), as fuel price has marked a drastic fall in global market, which remains stable for the last six months.
“We sought this amount as the cumulative loss of the state- owned organization stands at Tk 13,000 crore and the international fuel market goes ups and downs every moment,” said BPC Chairman AM Bodrudduza.
The Power Division sought Tk 7,200 crore and the Energy Ministry sought Tk 5,000 crore as subsidy to run the liquid fuel based power plants, BPC sources said.
BPC  is earning profit Tk 35 per litre octane, Tk 14 per litre  kerosene, Tk 13 per litre diesel, Tk 20 per litre furnace oil and Tk 19 per litre jet fuel.
“The subsidy would continue, as the government plans  minimizing the loss of state-owned PDB through giving direct subsidy to the power sector so that it would not impact  tariff,” a senior official at the Power Division said, preferring anonymity.
According to the Finance Ministry, in the last five years it gave Tk 8,000 crore subsidies to the Energy Ministry to procure fuel and TK 6000-7200 crore for the Power Division to run the high-cost liquid fuel-based power plants.
