Rosatom starts discussion on construction of Jordan s 1st NPP

Sergey Kiriyenko, Director General of Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear company made an official visit to Jordan to discuss perspectives of construction of the first Jordanian NPP. The Head of Rosatom met by the King of Jordan, Abdullah II ibn al-Hussein to apprise him the latest development and future plan regarding implementation of the project. Besides, Russian atomic experts and officials had a meeting with the country’s PM Abdulaah Ensur and key members of the Cabinet.
The Russian team had negotiations with the team of Jordanian Atomic Energy Commission headed by its chairman Khaled Toukan. The parties discussed practical issues concerning the partnership and their joint plans for the Jordanian NPP project start-up for next six months.
“Our today’s task is to structure the project’s pre-investment phase, prepare site research, elaborating the study of financial feasibility, environmental impact assessment and infrastructure analysis”, said Dzhomart Aliev, Director General of Rusatom Overseas, a sister concern of Rosatom who accompanied the Head of Rosatom. “We will also have to hold several events, meant to raise the project investment attractiveness and public acceptance” he added.
It may be recalled that the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is planning to construct the first NPP by 2019 in order to meet the country’s needs in electric energy and reduce the costs of electric power generation, taking 20% of the country’s annual budget.
The tender for construction of the unit 1 of first NPP in Jordan on turnkey basis with the option of unit 2 was announced in January 2011. Besides Rosatom, Canadian AESL, Japan-France consortium Areva and Mitsubishi took part in the tender. In 2013 the Nuclear Energy Commission of Jordan declared Rosatom as the winner.
The NPP will be built 25 km away from the town of Aqaba on the Red Sea coast. Russian project suggests construction of two reactors with the capacity of total 2,000 Mw. The project will be a joint venture with Jordan having 51% and Rosatom 49% of shares.
