Solar power plant is becoming popular in six upazilas of the district as it gives uninterrupted
power supply with low cost.
Many people of remote villages of Sadar, Amtali, Bamna,
Betagi, Pathorghata and Taltoli upazilas are now using solar
power in the district as it requires low cost.
Now the villagers neither suffer from low-voltage, nor get
irritated due to load shedding like those living in cities and
towns. The farmers are using solar power for irrigating in
agricultural fields. Solar plants have also been installed for
streetlights in many important place like Ferry Ghats.
The people of the areas are now watching television
programmes, using fans, lights and refrigerators, charging mobile
phone sets and operating some computers side by side with other
daily jobs.
Many rural people are showing keen interest in solar plants
as it gives uninterrupted power supply against the REB (Rural
Electrification Board), said some consumers.
Several thousand families in this district have installed
solar plant at their homes during the last two years. More than
5,000 well-to-do families living in this locality are interested
in solar plant for using fan, lights and television sets.
Farmers of Sadar and Amtali upazila using solar power for
irrigating their crops land for last three years.
At present, about 25 non-government organizations (NGOs) have
been providing solar plants to the interested people.
The price of a solar plant varies from Taka 13,000 to 70,000,
depending on its power producing capacity. One can get a solar
plant by depositing 20 to 30 percent of the total cost. The
remaining amount is payable in 25 to 40 installments while the
service charge ranges from 8 to 11 percent, said solar plants
providing agencies.
Students of different villages said they study at nights
getting uninterrupted service of these solar power and suggested
for establishing higher capacity solar power units in the areas.
