Bangladesh and Malaysia are going to install a 1,320 MW coal-fired
Power Plant under a Joint Venture approach in Maheshkhali,
Cox’sbazaar.
On Wednesday, Bangladesh state-owned Power Development Board (PDB)
signed this Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) with two Malaysian
companies—Tenaga Nasinol Berhad (TNB) and Powertek Energy Sdn Berhad
(PESB) at Putrajaya, Malaysia.
PDB chairman Shamsul Hasan Mia, TNB president Datuk Seri Ir Azman
Mohammad and PESB director Dato Mark William Ling Lee Meng signed the
contract on behalf of their respective companies.
Power secretary Monwar Islam was also present on the occasion. The
State Minister for Power Energy and Mineral Resources, Nasrul Hamid
led the whole delegation from Bangladesh. He said that, Bangladesh
would try to utilize the Malaysian expertise and experience in the
power sector throughout this JV project.
According to this JVA, a new company will be formed with a 50:50
partnership owning by both the partner countries. The company will be
responsible for recruiting the Technical Adviser, Developing
infrastructure, appointing EPC contractor through an international
tender, buying raw materials, manage credit from banks and all other
related work.
A Power Division statement said the project’s estimated cost might be
$2.5 billion.
Meanwhile, another Malaysian company, Powertech is involved in
different power plant projects having a grand total capacity of 920
MW.
Earlier on September 22nd, 2014, the Bangladesh government signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Dhaka with the Malaysian
government to set up the power plant under a joint venture.
Bangladesh is undergoing with another two similar type of power plant
projects, one in Rampal with Indo-Bangla JV and another in Paira with
China-Bangla partnership.
